1-2-3 and go! Casey Anthony Verdict – your thoughts?

I did not watch the entire trial, but I did watch closing arguments as well as some of George and Cindy Anthony’s testimonies. Here’s my take: we all KNOW she did it, but the prosecution didn’t have much to work with, ergo, reasonable doubt. No DNA, no definitive motive, no method of death, a body that disintegrated far too long thanks to Police not listening to Roy Kronk, etc.

It will also, IMO, in extraordinarily bad taste for Baez and team to be yukking it up with Champagne right after the verdict. Such shades of O.J. Will Schadenfreude catch up with Casey in the form of perjury charges against Cindy and a big huge bill from the State of Florida? Or will she be wooed with interviews and book deals? All I care is that there is a dead precious baby and one or more of those folks know about it.

And what did you all think of Casey’s glamorous look at sentencing? The hair, the makeup, the broad smiles? Had I dodged that kind of bullet, I’d still be in my schoolmarm phase. OK, go!

Morgan Harrington update

I never like when law enforcement goes “radio silent” on a case, but usually it’s because a) they haven’t got anything new to report or b) they do and they need to keep it from the public while they continue to piece together the investigation. They owe us, the public, nothing and while I know many folks are angry about the lack of information about Morgan’s disappearance, The Hook, a fantastic Charlottesville weekly, has done the best job of covering the story.

Kudos to Courteney Stuart, an editor of the Hook, for her outstanding reporting. Please read this article about what some witnesses are saying.

We pray for the safe return of Morgan to her family and friends. So many unanswered questions.

1) are there any photos of her that night?
2) is there any surveillance video from JPJ Arena?
3) Why is the University of Virginia choosing to remain silent about the case?
4) have the sex offenders in the area been questioned about that night?

Given the massive amount of blog commentary, Courteney has indeed done her homework, though it seems hard to get quite a few of them to stay on topic.

Your help is needed for the Richmond HS gang rape victim.

Hopefully, justice will be served in this most horrifying case of a) gang rape at a school dance, b) where up to 20 bystanders cheered and said nothing.

The 15 year old victim is said to be resting at home following her hospitalization. Here’s how you can help!

*Please* take a moment to send a card or note to the survivor of last Sat’s gang rape: Richmond High School is accepting cards and donations for the victim and her family. They can be mailed to the school at 1250 23rd St., Richmond, CA 94804-1011. Make checks out to the Richmond High Student Fund, with “For sex assault victim” written in the memo line.

Of course, I find it odd that the very school with improper lighting, security and chaperones is collecting the funds, but….please send your money to help her heal. She will have a long road, bless her.

Is Quinn Gray simply bipolar and troubled, or did she try to scam $50K from her husband.

This is such an interesting case – beautiful, wealthy Ponte Vedra, Florida housewife and mother Quinn Gray is alleged to have faked her own kidnapping and rape in order to extort $50K from her husband. Her own husband, Reid Gray, is defending her, as he is an attorney and he believes that her bipolar disorder has played a major role in her claims. Reid Gray believes his wife, despite a 20 minute audio tape of her having seemingly consensual sex with her alleged captor, who is believed to be her co-conspirator and who has rolled on her to the cops.

Her Facebook profile shows a normal 37-year-old wife and mom who liked television, hip hop music and living in her $4 million dollar home with her family. Reid Gray believes she may have been on a manic cycle of her bipolar illness and believed she was in danger or was in danger. The cops aren’t buying it.

Quinn’s 911 call was disturbing, as she claimed a man named Jasmin Osmanovic abducted her along with 3 others. Osmanovic said he was hired by Quinn to stage the whole thing and get the money as she was having marital and substance abuse problems. It seems he believed they were romantically involved. His girlfriend is the one who turned the audiotapes over to the cops.

The whole story is so disturbing, but I do know this – $50K is probably nothing for this woman to get her hands on and I doubt she would have to stage something so elaborate. That said, I believe her mental illness was certainly at play here. What do you think?

Gang rape of West Liberian girl, 9, draws victim-blaming from her family.

This is one of the most egregious stories I’ve read in a while. A little girl (a refugee from Liberia, living in Phoenix) was gang-raped by a group of boys, aged 9-14 (the 14 year old will be charged as an adult) and get this: her family feels she “has brought shame” on herself and their good name. Both the victim and the perps hail from the African nation of Liberia where rape was only considered to be a crime in 2006.

I’ve got news for these savage folks; you now live in America, where rape is a crime. To criticize this poor child, who will be physically and emotionally scarred forever, is almost a bigger crime than the rape itself. Thankfully, when she is released from the hospital, she will NOT be going back to the home, but placed somewhere else by CPS. Liberian officials, including President Ellen Sirleaf (yeah, a woman) are trying to spin it as if they have no clue why the family’s attitude is such, but I am a bit skeptical. Animals.

Read carefully the older sister’s comments and tell me that the world hasn’t gone to Hell in a handbasket. She advocates that the suspects be released because “we are the same people”. Huh? There are days when I think that the United Nations, Angelina Jolie and Superman himself cannot change attitudes. It reminds me of Islamic honor killings and the like. Whatever dark age these people live in, it ain’t right.

Say a prayer for this little girl.

Well, let’s get this loophole closed. How hard can this be?

So, day care facilities and summer camps hiring workers cannot get access to any out-of-state criminal records of potential employees. Good job. Nice. So, pedophiles can live near schools and parks, aren’t closely watched by parole/probation, can sometimes have Facebook and MySpace profiles and clearly use Craigslist to find their prey. How about using the Internet for good, rather than helping to PUSH these people to find new victims?

How to solve this one? Hello – lawmakers? Hello?

Hacker horror in Brooklyn – who is protecting our women?

Actually, who is protecting anyone, but this story of a Chinese immigrant who hacked his wife savagely for sweeping a broom over his foot while she cooked a meal for him is egregious in so many ways. Did he just snap? Have a history of violence? What resources are there for folks who may not want to “air dirty laundry” and suffer in silence?

Once again, I am appalled by some of the comments in the comment section. By all accounts, this woman, a home healthcare aide, was clearly a nurturer married to an insane, misogynistic, terrifying man. In six years, the neighbors suspected nothing and that is the hallmark of domestic violence.

Prayers to her. Oh, and didn’t you love his quote? What was he thinking?

Hatred. Not cool.

Mondays are tough enough for many of us – parenting, working (or not, in many cases), taking care of ourselves and those we love. Most of us watch the news, and some of us watch too much news. As a news junkie, I realize the negative reports can be bad for a fragile psyche, or even a happy one!

Today, I am struggling with the shooting at the Holocaust Museum, the hinky election in Iran and – I won’t even name him – the asshat who called Michelle Obama the descendant of “gorillas” on Facebook. How stupid for a person in office to use Facebook for such an ignorant comment?

I know Mrs. Obama doesn’t read such crap, but I am sure she’s been made aware of it and will not dignify it for a moment. Why all the hate? What’s wrong with people today? Let’s all do something beautiful, giving, lyrical and magical for one person today. Recycle a water bottle, read to a child, call a sick person, restrain yourself from posting something hateful on Facebook or a blog.

Be well, friends.

Justice revisited. An excellent article re: Gary Zerola in BoMag.

A few years ago, we heard a lot of activity around accused and acquitted serial rapist (I’m trying to say he was acquitted here – alleged, accused, acquitted, so don’t parse my words!), Gary Zerola.

Many people weigh in on the status of Zerola, the fundraiser, charmer, survivor of a sad childhood. They also weigh in on his dark side. It’s a well-written article by David Copeland and since I’ve received quite a few emails from some of his alleged victims, I thought we’d revisit it via this article, courtesy of Boston Magazine.

Enjoy and comment. As you know, you can always post here anonymously without fear of retribution as long as you keep it without racial slurs or personal attacks of a false nature. I want this to be a safe haven.
