1-2-3 and go! Casey Anthony Verdict – your thoughts?

I did not watch the entire trial, but I did watch closing arguments as well as some of George and Cindy Anthony’s testimonies. Here’s my take: we all KNOW she did it, but the prosecution didn’t have much to work with, ergo, reasonable doubt. No DNA, no definitive motive, no method of death, a body that disintegrated far too long thanks to Police not listening to Roy Kronk, etc.

It will also, IMO, in extraordinarily bad taste for Baez and team to be yukking it up with Champagne right after the verdict. Such shades of O.J. Will Schadenfreude catch up with Casey in the form of perjury charges against Cindy and a big huge bill from the State of Florida? Or will she be wooed with interviews and book deals? All I care is that there is a dead precious baby and one or more of those folks know about it.

And what did you all think of Casey’s glamorous look at sentencing? The hair, the makeup, the broad smiles? Had I dodged that kind of bullet, I’d still be in my schoolmarm phase. OK, go!

Is Quinn Gray simply bipolar and troubled, or did she try to scam $50K from her husband.

This is such an interesting case – beautiful, wealthy Ponte Vedra, Florida housewife and mother Quinn Gray is alleged to have faked her own kidnapping and rape in order to extort $50K from her husband. Her own husband, Reid Gray, is defending her, as he is an attorney and he believes that her bipolar disorder has played a major role in her claims. Reid Gray believes his wife, despite a 20 minute audio tape of her having seemingly consensual sex with her alleged captor, who is believed to be her co-conspirator and who has rolled on her to the cops.

Her Facebook profile shows a normal 37-year-old wife and mom who liked television, hip hop music and living in her $4 million dollar home with her family. Reid Gray believes she may have been on a manic cycle of her bipolar illness and believed she was in danger or was in danger. The cops aren’t buying it.

Quinn’s 911 call was disturbing, as she claimed a man named Jasmin Osmanovic abducted her along with 3 others. Osmanovic said he was hired by Quinn to stage the whole thing and get the money as she was having marital and substance abuse problems. It seems he believed they were romantically involved. His girlfriend is the one who turned the audiotapes over to the cops.

The whole story is so disturbing, but I do know this – $50K is probably nothing for this woman to get her hands on and I doubt she would have to stage something so elaborate. That said, I believe her mental illness was certainly at play here. What do you think?

A century later, justice for the family of Tom Joyner.

If you don’t know who Tom Joyner is, take a listen to his wildly popular, nationally syndicated radio show. I’ve been listening to him since the early 90s.

His two great uncles were wrongfully executed for the 1913 murder of a Confederate soldier and given the electric chair. Seems they had the wrong guys. This past week, the state of South Carolina officially pardoned the two wrongfully executed men, giving Joyner’s family the peace they so richly deserved.

Interestingly enough, Joyner did not know of the wrongful death until Skip Gates (White House beer and “teaching moment”) told him of the story.

Two female inmates in Oklahoma raped working at Governor’s mansion.

This is a terrible story of the rape of two inmates on work detail at the Oklahoma governor’s mansion. What makes it awful is that the suspects were merely fired and no charges are being brought against them, although it is clear the women were raped.

Are incarcerated people just not considered part of of society? What do you think?

Meth kills. Not only people, but dreams. Nicole Bobek – arrested in meth ring.

Nicole Bobek was an extraordinary talent in figure skating. That fairy tale has come to a screeching halt with news of her arrest in a New Jersey meth-distribution ring. It makes me frustrated to think about how a) role models let our kids down and b) what is it about sudden success in youth contributes to the downfall of these talented people? I am not saying she is not culpable, but I think the system of a meteoric rise to fame, then retirement while still young and trying to chase after the 14-year-olds, comes with a price to hard to pay.

I think about, natch, Tonya Harding when I read this. Some continue to fly high and recreate themselves (Kristi Yamagucki, Nancy Kerrigan, Dorothy Hamill, Monica Seles, Mary Lou Retton, Nadia Comaneci, etc.) when the gold medals and world titles fade away. After years of sycophantic praise, some of these young women are left to go back to their small towns and wonder how to reinvent themselves. Miss Bobek clearly chose a path fraught with danger, but I cannot help but think there is no guidance once you are not a winner in the eyes of the fans.

Justice revisited. An excellent article re: Gary Zerola in BoMag.

A few years ago, we heard a lot of activity around accused and acquitted serial rapist (I’m trying to say he was acquitted here – alleged, accused, acquitted, so don’t parse my words!), Gary Zerola.

Many people weigh in on the status of Zerola, the fundraiser, charmer, survivor of a sad childhood. They also weigh in on his dark side. It’s a well-written article by David Copeland and since I’ve received quite a few emails from some of his alleged victims, I thought we’d revisit it via this article, courtesy of Boston Magazine.

Enjoy and comment. As you know, you can always post here anonymously without fear of retribution as long as you keep it without racial slurs or personal attacks of a false nature. I want this to be a safe haven.

Breaking – Florida reverses itself and seeks the death penalty for Casey Anthony

In a groundbreaking maneuver, the State of Florida has reversed its prior decision and will now consider Casey Anthony eligible for the death penalty in the murder of her daughter, Caylee.

UPDATE: I have seen reports that Jose Baez may not be able to represent Ms. Anthony as he is not certified to argue a death penalty case. She needs to bring in the big guns.

That said, I have a theory about what happened. Yes, she should just plea and stop the lies and the death penalty thing will be off the table. I don’t believe that she intended to kill her child. Yes, you heard me. I think, in a partying haze, that perhaps she left the baby in a car, maybe aided by chloroform to “help her sleep”. Come on, Casey is quite dumb. The car overheated, Casey was a) out partying or b) with a man who expressed that he did not like children and the child died. Casey, in a panic, did not call 911. Instead, she began to weave this INSANE web of lies to cover up the child’s death. She carried the corpse in her car until she found the opportunity to wrap her in trash bags and bury her, never thinking she’d be found.

Now, her parents are going on “Oprah”. They won’t cooperate with Zenaida Gonzalez’s attorneys in the civil suit, they keep arguing that they want privacy, and yet, they will go on “Oprah”. I don’t know what to think. There’s part of me that really feels for these people, especially George. Cindy seems unhinged, but who am I to judge? She could be grieving for Caylee. While Cindy and George may not seem likable, who knows how one would act in the spotlight? Casey clearly is not getting any good advice from Mr. Baez (the most loathesome of any of the players at this point) and she should just break it down to the Judge and plea already.

I have turned very sharply away from my own case to highlight all sorts of cases as well as pop culture, etc., in a respectful way. Every once in a while, you’ll see me allude to hate mail.

Well – Happy Easter to me! This is not a “poor, pitiful me” posting, but one where I really want people to understand the Internet is a dangerous place and if you are parent, you CANNOT tell if the writer is some pimply 14-year-old with time on his hands or with a stash of guns and something to prove. Warning: tough to read. I received this on Easter morning. Nice, right?

“I just watched the dateline story about Liz Seccuro. Ur a fucking cunt!!! I hope you get raped again!!! This guy obviously felt very bad about what
he did to you. He went out of his way to apologize for what he did. He
didnt have to do that. The rape could have gone unsolved forever if not
for him trying to make it right. It sounds to me like he had also been
suffering for some time. He was having trouble dealing with something many
college guys would consider normal. He was a victim of his hormones just
like u were of rape. U wanna get mad at someone, get mad at god. This
dude didnt ask to be given hormones he couldnt control yet. Ur the worst
kind of person in the world. When someone reached out to u for forgiveness
u fucked them. U raped him. Good job!!! Now ur a rapist too. U raped
someone at their most vulnerable point. Ur a vengefull BITCH!!! I can
understand wanting vengence on someone who wasnt sorry. But the guy was
actually sorry. He wanted to let u know that and for that he was raped a
hell of alot worse than u were. And dont act like u didnt allow it to
happen. U probably enjoyed it. U know danm well that u were a slut
looking to get fucked that night anyhow. So, FUCK U and FUCK UR MOTHER!!! I hope she’s dead. And if she is, I hope she suffered greatly when she
died for making a peice of shit like u. If there’s a hell, u should both
be burning in it. Thanks alot u bowlegged whore. U’ve helped create a
world where someone cant even repent when they know they were wrong. Besides, u should consider urself lucky. Ur too fat & ugly for most guys. Ur an angry jealous fat cow that nobody wants. I wouldnt worry bout rape
anymore. Nobody wants u for anything!!!”

“Women serving in the U.S. military today are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq.”

A few months ago, I met with one of my Congressmen about the epidemic of military sexual assault after reading about the case of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach who was raped and murdered by a fellow soldier and the rash of disappearances and rapes on military bases in the United States.

Once again, I was shocked because the military pretty much answers to its own body and not to civilian laws, as they have tools like court martials, military trials and the like.

I am a big supporter of our troops and I applaud the work Michelle Obama is doing as she has identified military families as one of her main platforms as First Lady. That said, I want to know why the numbers are so shocking and do we, as we train soldiers, foster a sort of aggression in these soldiers that transfers back home? My dear friend and college roommate is married to one of my favorite people and he is doing another tour in Afghanistan right now, so this is not a personal issue.

This comes on the heels of my new facet of hate mail writers – military people. I wish I knew why they target me and how they don’t realize I harbor no ill will towards the military, but of rapists and murderers. A military friend today let me know that our military now accepts recruits with criminal records. Just saying.

What do Sandy Koufax, John Malkovich and Kevin Bacon have in common? Bernie Made Off with their money!

Seriously, I cannot wrap my brain around how someone can steal $50 BILLION dollars. That takes amazing skill. Today, the list came out of Bernie Madoff’s victims. I love Jane Fonda’s quote – she said she wanted to “shake him so hard his teeth fall out”. I loved that visual.

Greed is not good. While these people were not victims of, say, bodily harm, I am quite certain there is massive fallout and much depression. Of course, if you have your health (I know it’s a cliche), but I’d be spitting mad.

What makes me the maddest? He stole from Elie Wiesel. No one touches that guy. No one.

Madoff faces up to 20 years in prison. I wonder where the money is.
