A century later, justice for the family of Tom Joyner.

If you don’t know who Tom Joyner is, take a listen to his wildly popular, nationally syndicated radio show. I’ve been listening to him since the early 90s.

His two great uncles were wrongfully executed for the 1913 murder of a Confederate soldier and given the electric chair. Seems they had the wrong guys. This past week, the state of South Carolina officially pardoned the two wrongfully executed men, giving Joyner’s family the peace they so richly deserved.

Interestingly enough, Joyner did not know of the wrongful death until Skip Gates (White House beer and “teaching moment”) told him of the story.

Gang rape of West Liberian girl, 9, draws victim-blaming from her family.

This is one of the most egregious stories I’ve read in a while. A little girl (a refugee from Liberia, living in Phoenix) was gang-raped by a group of boys, aged 9-14 (the 14 year old will be charged as an adult) and get this: her family feels she “has brought shame” on herself and their good name. Both the victim and the perps hail from the African nation of Liberia where rape was only considered to be a crime in 2006.

I’ve got news for these savage folks; you now live in America, where rape is a crime. To criticize this poor child, who will be physically and emotionally scarred forever, is almost a bigger crime than the rape itself. Thankfully, when she is released from the hospital, she will NOT be going back to the home, but placed somewhere else by CPS. Liberian officials, including President Ellen Sirleaf (yeah, a woman) are trying to spin it as if they have no clue why the family’s attitude is such, but I am a bit skeptical. Animals.

Read carefully the older sister’s comments and tell me that the world hasn’t gone to Hell in a handbasket. She advocates that the suspects be released because “we are the same people”. Huh? There are days when I think that the United Nations, Angelina Jolie and Superman himself cannot change attitudes. It reminds me of Islamic honor killings and the like. Whatever dark age these people live in, it ain’t right.

Say a prayer for this little girl.

What is wrong with the world today?

When I first read this headline, I about screamed. Then, I realized perhaps this man was mentally ill (well, of course he is) and needs help. It seems 150 dead dogs were found in freezers in the man’s Dearborn, Michigan home and another 100 or so alive dogs roaming through feces and trash.

Authorities have taken the dogs (and the man) in. I will say that this is no Michael Vick case, but honestly, at what point do neighbors or family NOT realize there are almost 300 dogs, dead and alive, on a property? How do you even fit that many dogs in a home? What the heck?

David Letterman vs. Sarah Palin

Let me begin by saying I really do not care for Sarah Palin. She was unqualified for the Veep nomination and her town charged rape victims and their insurance companies for rape kits (around $1200). Alaska has the highest incidence of rape per capita, by the way.

That said, David Letterman really crossed the line by his comments about Bristol/Willow/whomever. You don’t joke about them being raped, “knocked up”, having sex with older men, etc. Imagine if he had said any of this about Sasha or Malia Obama? I voted for Obama, by the way. Barack and Michelle would have his head on a platter.

What I mean to express here is that while late-night comics clearly use our messed up political follies as great fodder for comedy (and usually successfully!), he really didn’t need to go there. Leave the kids out of it. Whether calling Chelsea Clinton “ugly” or making fun of the Bush twins partying habits, it’s not a good practice and I think he’s wrong. What did you think of his jokes? His half-assed apology?

Justice revisited. An excellent article re: Gary Zerola in BoMag.

A few years ago, we heard a lot of activity around accused and acquitted serial rapist (I’m trying to say he was acquitted here – alleged, accused, acquitted, so don’t parse my words!), Gary Zerola.

Many people weigh in on the status of Zerola, the fundraiser, charmer, survivor of a sad childhood. They also weigh in on his dark side. It’s a well-written article by David Copeland and since I’ve received quite a few emails from some of his alleged victims, I thought we’d revisit it via this article, courtesy of Boston Magazine.

Enjoy and comment. As you know, you can always post here anonymously without fear of retribution as long as you keep it without racial slurs or personal attacks of a false nature. I want this to be a safe haven.

Thank you, Queen Latifah!

The Queen has recently opened up to Essence magazine about the childhood sexual abuse she endured by a male babysitter. As always, when a celebrity opens up (see: Tim Roth, Teri Hatcher, Gabrielle Union), it rips the stigma away and helps real people to understand that sexual abuse is not a life sentence and that one can live a life of promise and excellence.

Says the Queen, “He violated me,” shares Latifah in the new issue of Essence. “I never told anybody. I just buried it as deeply as I could and kept people at an arms length. I never really let a person get too close to me. I could have been married years ago, but I had a commitment issue.”

So true. Thank you for not being silenced. Be strong.

“She suffered no serious injuries”. Really??? Sickest story of, I believe, the year.

I have long ranted about Craigslist being a haven for criminals (and furniture and babysitters), but it’s time for the government to step in.

This man arranged for the rape of his own wife on Craigslist WHILE HE WATCHED AND HIS CHILDREN WERE IN THE HOUSE. I never use the “f” word on my blog, but what the fuck is wrong with humanity today?

Read and comment please. My heart is broken. I would also like to appeal to the media to use responsible wording in their reports on rape. She will suffer lifelong injuries of the soul and psyche due to this crime. By minimizing the language because she didn’t have, say, obvious lacerations and bruises, you perpetuate the stereotype that rape is not deadly or injurious to victims. You only want to report it properly when the victim is a bloody pulp. Come on, now.

UPDATE: The husband says the wife approved of it and wanted it. Yeah, right. Have we learned nothing about Craigslist?

Not surprisingly, new charges for Melissa Huckaby…

Clearly, this woman is deranged (allegedly). In addition to her alleged rape and murder of Sandra Cantu, Huckaby has now been charged (as we thought) with the drugging/poisoning of two others, one a minor child.

I often wonder if the new victims would not have come forward had she not been indicted on the Cantu murder. Would she have continued her deadly spree? Are there more?

This is a vile, twisted case. What troubles me most is the fact that Huckaby herself is a mother and by many accounts, a good one. What is her motivation? What is her mental illness? Certainly, there are female sexual predators and that’s not what confuses me.

Keifer! What is going on w/ the celebs today?

Jack Bauer, er, the voice of those dreaded Bank of America commercials, um, KEIFER Sutherland, apparently flew into a violent rage at a Costume Institute Gala after-party last night and head-butted Jack McCollough, one half of the talented Proenza Schouler design duo.
Apparently, our designer friend has a broken nose.

When I think of Keifer, I think of this. Calm down, dude.

Or, I think of his dad, “Good morning, oranges….”. That is so soothing. When I have a panic attack, I should just listen to a loop of Donald Sutherland speaking.

What to think? Back on the sauce?

FUN UPDATE: Apparently, Jack M. knocked over Brooke Shields at the party, causing Kiefer to get all protective and demand he apologize to Brooke. They faced off and said head butt occured. Here’s what’s so odd: Brooke’s spokesperson is saying that no such thing happened and Brooke “does not know what would cause Keifer to act in such a manner.” Oh, goodness. I’m sticking with the Christmas tree theory.

Big, hot smoking mess, Take 2!

Remember Christina Elizabeth Szele of Queens, who was arrested on a JetBlue flight for smoking, being intoxicated and generally causing a ruckus? Well, she’s ba-ack.

Seems Szele put the beat down on her sister-in-law this past Sunday and was arrested again, causing the judge in the first case to revoke her bond. She now faces up to 20 months in federal prison for violating her probation. She agreed to 5 years probation, drug and alcohol classes and an anger management program, the latter of which clearly has not worked out too well for her.

Hm. On the one hand, she clearly has a problem. But 20 months in the Fed? Come on. On the other hand, how many times are killers and sex offenders arrested, only to find out they haven’t even been to probation? I feel like the Judge is not necessarily harsh; it’s just that Szele’s infractions are far less heinous than those committed by those who violate probation.

That said, the law is the law.
